The infant formula market is the fastest growing segment of the overall baby food industry. These alternative sources to breast milk have evolved into an extensive range of infant formulas with most designed to be used from birth through 12 months of age. Some are positioned as life-stage products, with formulation adjustments made at six, 12 and 18 months to satisfy the growing child's changing nutritional needs, usually up 24 months. "Growing-up milks have a different composition in terms of protein, calcium and vitamins and are intended as a supplement rather than as the sole source of nutrition for the growing child," says Anne Staudt Kvistgaard, head of pediat-ric sales and science development at Aria Foods Ingredients. "Growing-up milk is not usually designed to mimic human milk as closely as infant formula, but to provide nutrients to the growing toddler. This category includes a variety of products, from fairly basic milks with added vitamins to more sophisticated products fortified with ingredients such as whey protein and fish oils."
