As part of the construction of a fifth terminal at Heathrow, Vinci Construction Grands Projets, in partnership with Morgan Est, is constructing more than 14 km of tunnels under one of the biggest airports in the world. To adapt to the specific site constraints and the airport environment, the work team had to develop special techniques, and in particular a dual-mode compressed air and Earth Pressure Balance TBM and a method allowing a permanent lining of shotcrete to be put in place as work progresses as described in this article. The extremely innovative contract adopted by the Owner to conduct a capital spending programme worth over 5 billion euros is one of the remarkable features of this project.
