Various identity theorists now argue that the importance of 'work' in people's lives in contemporary western society is in decline. It is argued that identities which were once rigidly defined by the labour market now reside in the past; instead individuals are now free to construct their identities through consumerism, shifting and changing how they decide to be perceived and represented. This timely book challenges claims that work is no longer relevant to studies of identity.
