Traceability initiatives

Expectations in the fashion industry around traceability have reached a new level over recent years. The pressure is now intensifying on the textile and clothing industry to meet these increased demands as consumers seek more information about what they buy and yearn for ever greater levels of authenticity. Companies across the supply chain are now heavily focused on new efforts in this area, and this issue of Twist features several of the latest initiatives. In the first of a series of articles about the use of blockchain technology in the global wool industry, we report on the first blockchain network transaction completed between Australia and China for a wool shipment (page 22-23). The use of blockchain technology is set to increase in the wool industry and the textile sector as a whole over the next few years, with cellulose fibres giant Lenzing (page 6) among a number of leading companies exploring this area. Meanwhile, in the cotton sector, Oritain, the product and supply chain traceability specialist, has completed its mapping of all Supima cotton growing regions (page 7). This now allows Supima's 200 brand and retailer partners to independently verify the authenticity of their product.
