THE SINGULARITY

Some call it the Rapture of the Nerds; others fear it's the end of humanity. Either way, the Singularity-a term popularized by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge in 1993-is due to hit right after we finally crack the problem of artificial intelligence. The idea is that once we create an entity that thinks faster than a human, it will design better hardware and software to run on, making itself even smarter. We'll finally be able to upload our consciousness to the cloud.
