John A. Roebling (1806-1869) was the founder of the wire rope industry in the USA. This essay is the second of six short chronologies summarizing the attainments of this brilliant man. It is almost impossible for Americans today to imagine what life must have been like in Europe at the time when Johann Etzler began to preach his Utopian idealism at Miihlhausen in Prussia. Napoleon Bonaparte was dead. The new world order established by the Congress of Vienna was falling apart. There were simultaneous revolutions in Poland, Belgium and France.
