John A. Roebling (1806-1869) was the founder of the wire rope industry in the USA and was also famous as a bridge builder. This essay is last of six short chronologies summarizing the attainments and legacy of this unusual man. By the time the American Civil War ended in 1865, our nation already had entered the period we call Reconstruction which was probably the most politically complex era of our history. At its beginning, the U.S. president was Andrew Johnson, earlier elected governor, congressman and senator from Tennessee.
