Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has a population of about 7.8 million persons (17 million in the greater metropolitan area), making it one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia. Indonesia's economic growth has been steady in recent years, although less than that of Thailand. The old town center forms Jakarta's northern point, which stretches southward in a roughly 10km-long corridor. The city's most recent redevelopment has been concentrated along the roads off Sudirman Street, on the southern axis of the corridor, and traffic is especially heavy here.
