United utilities (UU) was recently faced with the task of rerouting a 200m section of Welsh Water main because of the construction of the A465 dual carriageway. The utility called on the hot-tapping and line-stopping skills of technical and engineering services company Furmanite. This enabled the main to remain online and under pressure while the work was carried out. Hot tapping - also known as under-pressure drilling - is used to provide additional branches or modifications, instrumentation monitoring points, or entry points for isolation. The procedure means drilling into a pressurised line to ensure pressure and content is contained.
