European developments in R&D funding - the Framework IV programme

This brief article sets out the present state of European Union funding for R&D, with particular attention paid to BRITE - EURAM and the CRAFT programmes. It discusses which types of projects fall within the purview of tie schemes and how eligible companies can obtain funding to find research partners, and, once found, to establish a full project. In 1994 the European Parliament approved a 12.3 billion ECU (pound 9.5 billion) programme for 1994 - 1998 to support industry in the areas of: R&D, technology transfer, training and international co-operation. This programme, called 'Framework IV is to cover all of the current EC funding programmes for R&D and training, of interest to TWI member companies.
