A water becomes increasingly scarce in portions of the US, . more attention is being given to alternate sources of potable water. One option is seawater desalination to reduce the dissolved salts to levels acceptable for drinking. This process typically uses reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, which require that the influent silt density index (SDI) be 3 %/ min or less. To achieve this, seawater is often pretreated with coarse and fine strainers followed by a microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membrane system.
