IMPACTS OF HURRICANE RITA ALONG THE SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA COAST, U.S.A.

Data of storm surge elevations generated by Hurricane Rita were analyzed and the zones of high water level were delineated. Aerial photos taken two weeks after land fall further helped in elucidating the level of damage caused to the wetlands as well as the coastal infrastructure. The role of waves in the damage of coastal properties is not yet well understood. The aerial photos taken from the overflight were analyzed along with high resolution coastal lidar data to quantify the alteration in the coastal geomorphology induced by the hurricane.
