New sounds from an old troubadour

He's "America's tuning fork," the "Thomas Jefferson of folk mu-I sic." But on the cusp of his 77th birthday, Pete Seeger—creator of such activist anthems as "We Shall Overcome" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"—has more urgent business bubbling than this month's release of his first studio album in 17 years. Right now, it's maple syrup. "I keep taking on projects," the troubadour explains as he prepares to stoke the fire under a vat of sap tapped from trees around his home beside the Hudson River near Beacon, N.Y. "At first, I made 1 or 2 gallons. Then I said, 'Oh, let's make 3 or 4.' And then — this is the danger —I got ambitious."
