I was standing at the front desk of the New York Hilton & Towers waiting to check in when the clerk pushed a form my way and asked me to sign. The gist of the agreement: If my traveling companion were to make too much noise, we'd be evicted, and if she were to harm any hotel staff or guests, or trash the room, I'd pay damages. As I eyed the form, the clerk laughed and reassured me. "It's merely a formality," he said. "We find dogs are much better behaved than people."
