Badlands of the Republic is an excellent, largely empirical, account of three decades of French urban policy, starting with policy formation after the first major urban riots of the early 1980s and ending with an interpretation of the responses to the urban riots that paralysed France for several weeks in October 2005. Dikec guides the reader effortlessly through the recent history of French urban policy-making mainly through highlighting key moments of change in consecutive policy documents.
