Urban politics: critical approaches

This collection of essays by geographers takes as its unifying theme the socio-spatial dynamics of power and contestation in and through contemporary cities. Rather than privileging a particular overarching theoretical or political commitment, editors Mark Davidson and Deborah Martin frame the text as providing something of a survey of contemporary theoretical and empirical interests in critical urban research. Thus, chapters are informed by theoretical concerns ranging from queer theory to the continued salience (and need for updated understandings) of class relations and consider topics as diverse as the multi-scalar geographies of home financing, the embeddedness of entrepreneurs in place, and the potentially outsized political power held by mayors.
