Noel Curran joined RTE in 1992 as an investigative journalist, and was director general of Ireland's premier broadcaster from 2011 to 2016. He then became DG of the European Broadcast Union (EBU) replacing Ingrid Deltenre, discovering that two of his biggest in-tray issues were the perils now facing independent journalists, and the immense dangers around fake news. One of the first tasks Curran completed was moving the EBU forward commercially and politically. "We established the commercial subsidiary Eurovision Services. It handles our distribution business and has its own chief executive and board. It has been both a cultural and structural separation," says Curran. "As part of that new move we opened an office in Madrid where we have 30 staff. They are working on digital innovation and providing digital solutions to federations, sports and other clients.
