Skills challenge strikes balance between engineering disciplines for new mechelec category

Employers in the bus and coach sector will be pleased to discover how the IRTE Skills Challenge integrated a combined mechanical and electrical category into the latest incarnation of its competition in 2021. As bus builders integrate more electronics into mechanical systems, employers are increasingly seeking out technicians who are trained in both disciplines. Modern bus and coach apprenticeships now often combine the two roles to offer courses known as mechelec which satisfy the industry's growing need for multi-skilled technicians, to become more aligned with the heavy vehicle sector where there has long been a requirement for both disciplines.
