The authors are to be congratulated on taking this fresh approach to an old problem. I have two questions: Why do so many rigs fail a significant time after being subject to extreme loads? There are numerous reports of yachts losing their rigs in benign conditions some days or weeks after having sailed through bad weather. This appears to be some combination of useful life failure and wear out failure; or is there something else going on? Much the same phenomenon occurs with rudder stocks.
