More than ninety percent of traffic accidents are caused by human errors in recognition, judgment or operation. In constructing the active safety system on this premise that "human errors are unavoidable," two different approaches have been studied. The method adopted in one approach was to build the machine-centered automation system by excluding the human from the vehicle operation control loop. In the other approach, the system was built with the human at its center as usual, and the machine was provided with the function for reducing the occurrence of human errors, or the function for preventing that human errors directly link up an accident (= driven assist system).
