When the tenants' leases of 180 Great Portland Street in London's West End expired in 2004, the developer, Great Portland Estates, was handed back a building that was functionally obsolete. As one of the grandest and largest buildings in the Marylebone Conservation Area, and with its splendid Edwardian architecture, the property was intrinsically highly desirable for conversion into high quality office space.rnThe skilful design by architect Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands enabled the conversion of the Edwardian mansion block into prime office space, increasing the net area by 15%, with minimum loss of existing material and embodied energy.
