Reviewers should be compelled to declare their prejudices and bias and so, to set an example, this reviewer confesses that his family background (RAF and army) contains neither blue nor green water. That notwithstanding, however, he considers that the senior service's determined stance as the 'silent service' has meant that many of its achievements have not met with the praise they were due. As an example, the Royal Navy was the first service to make operational a centimetric radar, the Type 271, which materially assisted the hard-pressed British convoy escorts in winning the Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War.
