The view that science is the measure of all things (as Sellars put it) not only is, but necessarily is, wrong, because "scientific theory belongs to a conceptually secondary framework and must respect the primary scheme of commonsense thought." [...] we cannot legitimately hold commonsense physical and mental properties hostage to scientific vindication; we cannot maintain that if an item is not to be eliminated then it must be reduced.
