The month of November saw a complete blockade of the Settle & Carlisle line as Railtrack and its contractors went to work on the most significant upgrade since the line's construction. The announcement of the project originally came from Railtrack - as the S&C was celebrating the tenth anniversary of its reprieve. The company revealed that it was to spend £15 million on top of what had already been allocated to the route for maintenance over the next three years, with the possibility of further expenditure in the future.
