Repairs to Irish Rail's Malahide viaduct, which collapsed on August 21, just after a train had passed over it (Oct issue, p9), are expected to be completed much sooner than expected. Despite initial estimates of a long closure, contractors for larnrod Eireann have rebuilt the collapsed pillar and also a weir, along with reinforcement of all the viaduct's other pillars. Cost of the repairs is put at 4 million euros.
