On the afternoon of July 21, 2003, gale force winds toppled twenty-one of the forty-spans of the 300-foot tall Kinzua Viaduct, an historic Civil Engineering Landmark. A Board of Inquiry investigation of the collapse was conducted on August 12, 2003 by a team of forensic engineers, metallurgical specialists, meteorological scientists and government engineers. The findings of the cause of collapse and recommendations for other "wind susceptible" structures are identified in the final Board of Inquiry Report dated December 31, 2003. This paper presents the highlights of the findings and recommendations.
