Very little remains from the Stirling period of the Great Northern Railway (1867-1895). The main item of significance is the famous Eight-Foot Single No. 1, built at Doncaster in 1870 and a jewel in the crown of the National Railway Museum since its opening at York in 1975.rnHowever, unbeknown to the vast majority of visitors who've admired the locomotive there (including, I suspect, many rail enthusiasts), there has been something seriously wrong with that display all these years. For No. 1 is paired with the wrong tender!
