All the arguments against it listed in Nick Pigott's excellent article are valid. However, the most conclusive is that investment in a nationalised railway would have to compete for Treasury funding with the NHS and social care for an ageing population, defence against increasingly militant terrorists, and programmes of new school and prison building, let alone the road and air transport lobbies.
