Sudden Custody Death Syndrome

Sudden Custody Death Syndrome is a rare but catastrophic condition. While the death is often referred to as unexpected, the purpose of this article has been to highlight the well-characterized progression of symptoms leading up to death. Prompt, early recognition is key in the management of these patients. Law enforcement should suspect the presence of excited delirium and therefore the potential for SCDS in any patients demonstrating the acute onset of violent or bizarre behaviors (Table 2, see page 20). When in doubt, always err on the side of caution and call for medical evaluation and ALS ambulance transportation. Attempt to mitigate the potential for decompensation (inability of the heart and lungs to maintain adequate blood oxy-genation and circulation) as much as possible (Table 3, see page 23). It is hoped that increased awareness of warning signs might prevent future deaths.
