A West Virginia sheriff's deputy conducts a traffic stop on a car for not displaying a motor vehicle inspection sticker. During the stop, the driver shoots the deputy with a .25 caliber handgun and speeds off as the deputy returns fire. Although wounded with a collapsed lung, the deputy pursues his would-be assassin, calling in the information to his communications center before being overcome by his injury. After an unsuccessful attempt at carjacking another vehicle, striking a State Police cruiser and speeding past a barricade, the police are able to disable the vehicle, causing it to stop. As officers are yelling for the driver to give up, he shoots his passenger, who later dies from her injuries, and then turns the gun on himself.
