摘要

As the exploration of hydrocarbon deposits continues in the freezing waters of the Arctic, the need to address risk factors related to the regions severe climate conditions, the abnormal vulnerability of its ecosystems and the remote nature of Arctic offshore oil and gas field developments, based far from industrially developed areas, remains paramount. Such risk factors have necessitated a special emphasis on safety. Together with the design, construction and operation of drilling, development, storage and transportation units, the execution of marine operations remains one of the major considerations when implementing such exploration projects. Delivering sophisticated engineering structures (such as fixed offshore platforms, floating storage and offloading units, offloading terminals, subsea production systems and so on) to each operation constitutes an ambitious engineering and logistical feat, requiring as much scientific and technical expertise as does the process of creating offshore projects.
