For 245 years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has served its mission to deliver vital public and military engineering services-partnering in peace and war to strengthen the nation's security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters. It has encountered floods and hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires, terrorism and war. This spring, the pandemic that our nation, and our world, faces is testing responsiveness and resilience in every corner of the globe. And USACE is at the forefront of delivering engineering solutions once again. As part of the whole of government response to COVID-19, USACE is contributing to the efforts to provide hospital care capabilities at a number of locations across America that might have exceeded capacity. USACE teamed up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Health & Human Services to convert existing facilities into alternate care facilities, providing more than 14,500 bed spaces in high-risk areas. Army engineers continued their pandemic response, even as storms and flooding turned 11 counties in the State of Mississippi into additional federal disaster response missions.
