Air Force Enlisted Dormitories

The Air Force has a new 10-year master plan for unac-companied enlisted dormitories. The plan, occa-sioned by changes to the permanent party dormitory design standards set by the DOD, defines the funds to sup-port capital improvements and deliver quality, allowing greater flexibility, more building for the same or fewer dollars, and enhanced quality of life of Airmen. The changed standards eliminate the 11-sq m limit on individual resident living area. But they do not affect the gross building area limit of 33-sq m per person or allow higher costs than those imposed by the earlier standards. The Air Force Directorate of Civil Engineering's Housing Division brought together its office of Installation Logistics Engineering and Housing (ILEH) and the Air Force's Center for Environmental Excellence in partnership with our company in late 2001 to study how the "service could best use this revision and determine the basic requirements and optimal configuration. Various analyses focused on space requirements, programming limitations, comparative construction costs, building proportions and other factors.
