Water systems management must include Legioneila risk assessment

National guidelines for the control of Legionellosis in Ireland, published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) in 2009, advocate a systematic and multidisciplinary risk management approach to the prevention and control of exposure to Legionella bacteria through wastewater systems.According to Joan O'Donnell, chairperson of the Legionnaires' Disease subcommittee which compiled the 2009 report: "Outbreaks of Legionnaires' Disease have the potential to cause high levels of morbidity and mortality in those exposed." Engineers and technicians across a range of water, environmental and maintenance services need to be trained in appropriate risk management measures, including a written risk assessment.
