Demand for cheap airline tickets, international pressure to reduce emissions and the desire to improve profits by bringing down maintenance times means both military and commercial aircraft must become lighter and more efficient. As the percentage of composite materials used to make aircraft increases, designers are having to re-visit tried-and-tested fastening solutions by examining whether their design can be altered to minimise maintenance without affecting their ability to do their job. This is to ensure they are compatible with these new materials.
