Development of energy storage threatened by electricity reform

There is a risk that energy storage is "not going to get going" unless the government changes its policies on electricity market reform, according to the chief scientific adviser to the energy and climate department (DECC). Professor David Mackay made the comment at a conference on energy storage held by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London in March. Interest in energy storage has been increasing alongside the growth of intermittent wind power. The technology includes devices such as batteries that take surplus or cheap electricity and store it over several hours until needed.
