Bringing Design Thinking to Bear on the Big Issues

Welcome to this special issue of The Design Journal, which presents five extended papers based on presentations delivered at Design Connexity, the Eighth European Academy of Design (EAD) Conference, held in Aberdeen at the Robert Gordon University in April 2009.rnThe papers for this special issue have been selected on the basis of votes given by delegates attending the conference. As ever with the EAD conference, the themes of the conference were quite broad - however certain themes did become more prominent as the conference developed: In particular design thinking and service design were very clear front runners in the list of topics explored by the delegates. Other themes included sustainable design, responsible design, empathic design, design boundaries and anti-design.
