State lawmakers have introduced a variety of legislation affecting telephone marketing. Here are some examples: A West Virginia bill prohibits telephone solicitation after 8 p.m. weekdays or on Sundays. Telephone solicitors who call an unlisted number are guilty of a misdemeanor, as is anyone soliciting to an unlisted number within 12 months after the holder of the unlisted number has requested that the solicitor refrain from calling that number. A measure in Indiana makes it a Class C misdemeanor to make solicitation of debt collection calls on Sundays. In Washington, a bill prohibits telephone solicitation calls after 5 p.m.
