O'Rielly Eyes 5.9 GHz Band Order Vote This Summer

FCC Commissioner Mike O'Rielly expressed optimism recently that the FCC will adopt an order in its 5.9 gigahertz band proceeding this summer. "It's a great, balanced approach. I'm very hopeful that we'll get a chance to vote on it this summer," Mr. O'Rielly said during a May 27 webinar on spectrum issues hosted by the Lincoln Network. Last December, the FCC adopted a notice of proposed rulemaking in ET docket 19-138 proposing to divide the 5.9 GHz band between unlicensed uses such as Wi-Fi and road-safety technologies (TR, Dec. 20, 2019). The NPRM, which was adopted over the objections of the U.S. Department of Transportation and some auto safety interests, proposed to make the lower 45 megahertz of the band available for unlicensed use and the upper 20 MHz for cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology. The NPRM sought comment on whether to allocate the remaining 10 MHz to C-V2X or to DSRC (dedicated short-range communications) technology.
