Belhoste's breadth of scope, his analyses, and his extensive bibliography and notes make this book an important contribution to the history of education, science, technology, and institutions of the nineteenth century. It should be considered an essential acquisition for any graduate library. Belhoste achieves his goal of increasing our understanding of the structure and operation of the Ecole as part of a particular technocratic system. Perhaps more important, he has shown in detail how individuals and groups made choices about the design of educational components that contributed to the form and direction of technology in France.
