摘要

A longtime fan of the television program "How It's Made," Ashaki Gumbs was in middle school when he thought he might want to become an engineer. But, he said, "I was a kid. What did I know?" Now Ashaki is 18. He just graduated from high school and is on his way to a five-year applied physics and engineering program that will begin at State University of New York at Geneseo and, if all goes according to plan, end at Columbia University. About two miles away from Asha- ki's school in Ozone Park, Queens, Nasiah Johnson is pursuing a similar path. In the fall, he'll be off to study engineering at State University of New York at Buffalo. A lot of other high school students, Nasiah said, "are not thinking long-term." But Nasiah clearly is. Also 18, he's been interested in engineering since he took robotics in middle school and set out to attend a high school he thought might help him reach that goal.
