A gate latch for tough climates

Temperatures on the Canadian prairies range from over 100°F in the summer to -40°F in the winter. The freeze-thaw cycle results in constant soil movement, which wreaks havoc on fences and, in particular, the gate-latch function. Latches that are perfectly aligned in the summer bind as the soil freezes, and the fence posts move.
