摘要

Success or failure of a college course in surveying engineering can be explicitly measured through the use of course outcomes. At Penn State Wilkes-Barre, direct measurement of course outcomes achievement is performed through examinations and specific exercises in the introductory plane surveying course. In addition, a survey of the class is used to indirectly assess the level of course outcomes achievement as perceived by the students. A performance target is used, to determine success or failure, and a rubric is used to assign a level of achievement while providing direction for course improvement. This data are used to: (1) provide feedback to the students on course outcomes that need further attention, (2) provide feedback to the course instructor on level of achievement of course outcomes, and (3) assess the quality of instruction in the course offering. The assessment methods are used to improve the course and provide documentation that program outcomes are being achieved.
