The affects of technological developments are often predictable - albeit occasionally with the benefit of hindsight - but sometimes less so. How, many observers once speculated, would branding fare in the electronic world? It was once thought that the use of brands online would become unnecessary, that they would not be needed in the same way that they are used in their physical form. In fact, the opposite has proved to be the case - brands and the branding of a company are more important in the online world; consumers prefer to buy from brands that they trust, have confidence in and that embody a clear message. In other words, what applies in the physical world applies even more online where brands cannot capitalize on their power in traditional contexts such as stores.
