The state Department of Education said Alabama's 371 high schools will offer distance learning by fall 2009, and starting with the class of 2012 all students must take at least one course that way. The state has been promoting distance learning since 2006 by giving each school $50,000 to $85,000 for teleconferencing equipment and laptop computers for student. But 190 high schools lack distance learning. Alabama's education budget has undergone substantial cuts, but the distance-learning program is funded by a separate education bond issue.
