The problems associated with designing a venue that has good acoustics for speech are well understood. Minimizing strong reflections and lowering reverberation time and level produces greater overall speech intelligibility. The enveloping reflected field and the reverberation that is vital to the listening experience for acoustic musical sources, such as an orchestra or choir, often are a hindrance in designing sound systems for intelligible speech. Nonetheless, electronic sound systems designed to increase speech intelligibility in both dry and reverberant spaces have been used for some time, with largely successful results.
