Last month, I discussed ground instruction and suggested that glossing over ground school and focusing solely on flight training may miss a crucial opportunity for pilot development, since ground school affords the occasion for professional mentorship and sharing wisdom beyond the FAA testing material. Today, I will discuss how my ground school preparation prepared me for flight training, and suggest that the most valuable thing I learned during my flight training was not learning how to teach maneuvers, but rather learning how to develop "four-dimensional thinking." Four dimensional thinking consists of anticipating and being able to respond to external factors that affect your latitude and longitude (position), altitude and time. In short, this means having good perception of the environment around you and being able to multi-task in order to respond to the dynamic conditions of a training flight.
