I sometimes venture down from my ivory tower and mix with real teachers—people who are paid to teach full-time and have to produce learning objectives and lesson plans and mark homework. These people really love their subject and try to instil such enthusiasm into stroppy 15-year-olds. They have up to 30 contact hours a week, rather than the 30 contact hours a year that many of my academic colleagues grumble about. At least most of my students actually want to be there most of the time (except possibly the MBChB students!). I can't imagine having to deal, day in day out, with students who wish they were anywhere but school.
