Vic Young recalls three traditional ship and highlights the changes they underwent during the final years of their commercial careers. As conventional shipping gave way to container vessels during the 1970s and 1980s, many traditionally designed ships took on new guises for the twilight years of their career. For some, it was a subtle change of colour or a name bestowed by new owners often on a short term basis for little more than the passage to the breaker's yard. For others, it was something more substantial, such as a new trade for a new owner, often far removed from the service for which they had been originally designed and built. Some were altered considerably. The three ships described below all underwent various changes to a greater or lesser degree during this time.
