The dawn of air travel and the birth of modern cruising has seen the number of stately passenger ships gradually decline, while the advent of containerisation has spelt the end of the conventional cargo liner. Only a few decades ago, these ships, with their machinery space and accommodation block located amidships, crowded the waterfront. Today, such vessels are rarities and only one, Hamburg Sud's Cap San Diego, has been preserved for posterity. It is intriguing, then, to look back to the late 1960s and early 1970s when these ships could be seen, in days, when crews could number well into the 50s and days rather than hours could be spent in port.
